Abstract

This paper seeks to reveal the rhetorical significance of both the two coordination particles: ‘faa’ and ‘waw’ modifying temporal ‘lamma’ – indicating time change with fast or slow pace- in Yousef surah (peace be upon him).

This is based on two firm facts – linguistic and theological- that each lexical item is in its correct place, i.e. it cannot be replaced from both the linguistic and theological point of view. Moreover, there are subtle differences between these two particles, making them mutually exclusive. Otherwise, one of them will surpass the other in the sublime surah although, their frequent repetition in the surah or the two particles share equally the repetitive pattern. Yet, the fact is that the pattern (faa + lamma) is twice as much as the (waw+lamma) pattern.

The paper is developed on the significance of ‘faa’ and ‘was’. The first indicates the order and tracking. The later indicates pure coordination. Thus, the paper tackles 13 positions of the ‘faa’, and six positions of the ‘waw’, making up 19 positions in which they are attached to ‘lamma’ in the sublime surah.

The introduction uncovers the research objectives as well as the methodology. The preface represents a background on the three particles: ‘faa’, ‘waw’ and ‘lamma’. There are two sections: the first one titled ‘the impact of ‘faa’ modifying temporal ‘lamma’ in indicating contracting the time of the events; the second one titled ‘the impact of ‘waw’ modifying temporal ‘lamma’ in indicating relaxation of the time of the events’. The paper concludes several findings stated in the conclusion.
