Abstract

A sentence is composed of two components: form and meaning. In this research, the discussion is focused on the meaning, and more specifically on the so-called “usefulness” as ancient grammarians have named it. It is the purpose of producing speech, unlike the form, which has received much attention by grammarians.  Hence, I addressed, in this research, a large number of aspects of the issue about usefulness of the sentence, presented the ancient and modern grammarians’ points of views, and then reported the most important results that the research has reached.
