Abstract

This research tried to elucidate the concept of 'Accepted Grammatical Judgment' for Sibawayh, identify its features and causes, and highlight how to implement it in language structures. A descriptive-analytical approach was used to find out the occurrences of this judgment in Sibawayh's book for more consideration. The study concluded that the 'Accepted Grammatical Judgment' is used either for the sake of language variation or that its grammar is meant for a moral or verbal reason.

This study revealed as well that Sibawayh's use of 'Accepted Grammatical Judgment' bases on moral and verbal reasons. The moral reasons can be summed up in two main ones: (1) achieving the purpose of informing the addressee along with keeping the meaning, and (2) meeting the speaker’s intention in structuring.  As for the verbal reasons, they can be summarized into (1) using linguistic structure for brevity, (2) achieving proportionality, (3) seeking lightness, (4) providing a good analogy for the linguistic structure, (5) maintaining the original form of the structure, (6) considering the length of the speech, and (7) considering the Factor Theory.

This paper also demonstrated that grammatical judgement disapprobation in Sibawayh's view is for two main motives: (1) structural inappropriateness; and (2) violation of the requirements of the theory of grammatical work.
