Idiomatic Expressions in The Al-Meqnaz Al-Qabeer A study in collection, arrangement & definition

Abstract

The research studies the reality of idiomatic expressions in Arabic glossaries, including, for example “Al-Meqnaz Al-Qabeer”, providing a contribution to develop the methodology for collecting & entering it in the glossary regarding its order and definition. It followed the descriptive approach that’s based on analysis and reliance on examples and evidences to induct facts and conclusions. Study was made on two aspects: a theoretical aspect which included: introducing Al-Meqnaz Al-Qabeer, the concept of idiomatic terms & expressions accompanying them, their patterns & sources, and finally idiomatic expressions & linguistic glossaries, ancient & modern, but for the applied aspect, it included applied examples revealing their reality regarding collection, arrangement & definition. The research came to conclusions, the most important of which are: Idiomatic expressions were collected from various sources: religious, lexical, literary, ancient & modern, written & audio, and placed in sub-entries following the main entries, symbolized and at the end of the field entitled (General Contextual Expressions), the same expressions are repeated between both places, their repetition in sub-entries is made opposite the words also without reference reflecting disorder.

Regarding definition, expressions get their definition opposite the word & are sometimes left without it, and the definition differs in its formal & semantic details, but for expressions coming at the end of field, the field becomes indicative thereto generally.
