Hafs’s Pauses Agreed on by Reciters in the Holy Qur'an: A Grammatical, Pragmatic Study

Abstract

This research studies of one of the types of pauses in the Holy Qur'an, namely the Imam Hafs bin Suleiman’s pause agreed upon (by reciters) in the Holy Qur'an. Four of Imam Hafs’s pauses were stated in the Shatibiya Text. Such are which are the words of the Almighty:

{وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ عِوَجًا (1) قَيِّمًا لِيُنْذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا} [الكهف: 1، 2]، {قَالُوا يَاوَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا هَذَا مَا وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَصَدَقَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ} [يس: 52]، {وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ} [القيامة: 27]، {كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ}ﱠ [المطففين: 14].

In his Harz Al-Amani and Wajh Al-Tahani, such pauses are stated as follows:

And the stroke of Imam Hafs bin Suleiman’s tender pause, not full stopping, on the “Alif” (A in alphabet) in Awja without

And the noon (n) in “man raq?” (Who will cure?), and the (noon) (N) in marqadena (place of sleep) and the (laam) (l) in “the stain has covered...” and the remainders, continuing, not stopping

This research took into consideration the aspects of expression, meaning and linguistic justification of these four pauses. Such were dealt with in in the introduction to discussing Imam Hafs’s pauses. came in a preface to talk about Imam Hafs, and what is meant by pauses and full stopping, and then study Hafs’s positions of silence in the Holy Qur'an
