Abstract

This  paper  addresses  the  syntactic  features  that  are  inconsistent with the standard Arabic in the use of surnames by the contemporary Saudi families, whether the surnames are combined with names before them or without them, and the paper sought to solve their problems according  to  the  rules  of  classical  syntax,  as  a  contribution  to standardizing the colloquial language and closing the gap between it and the standard language. The paper was divided into two parts: The First: A study of the problems of the inconsistency of the surnames with their original form or their use in the standard language or the addition of definite article “Al”to it. The Second: A study of the problems related to the parsing of  the  surnames  that  exist  with  their  names  in  the  same  context  or whose wordings were reported without changes. The researcher concluded that there is among the use of surnames by  the  Saudi  families  those  that  are  consistent  with  the  standard language or that may be ascribed to a form traceable to the standard, and  there  are  others  that  are  inconsistent  with  the  standard  usage  or that could not be ascribed to an acceptable form.
