Abstract

This study is based on the descriptive analytical methodology, and uses the tools of modern narrative theories to investigate Saudi short stories.

It shows that dialogue performs various functions linked to narrative variations in the text. Also, some of the dialogues cover the text while others include a different narrative, or stories parallel to the central story.

The study concludes that there is a close link between the dialogue and all of the character, narrative paradox, formation of internal and external narrative vision, and the narrator and who he/she narrates about. The study also draws attention to the link between dialogue and narrative time, going backward or going forward, or both. Thus, dialogue is able to create its own narrative dynamics, adding new venues  to  the text from various perspectives.
