Abstract

This study is about the conditional sentence, and its applications to the Anthology of Qays Lubna. The conditional is one of the established Arabic techniques that are multi-functional, commonly used in languages. The conditional sentence is a noticeable phenomenon in the Anthology.

The poetry of Qays ibn Dhurayh is significant in the field of argumentation for its language and grammar. Its poetry belongs to the era of accepted argumentation, and is mentioned in the books of early authors.

The study extrapolates the position of the conditional tools in the Anthology, classifies them according to their specific grammatical types ,examines their meaning and uses ,and the way they are related to the context, and compares the rules written in the grammarians' books  with those in the Anthology. The study then examines the patterns of the structure of the conditional sentence, and applies them to what is written in the Anthology to determine, with examples from the Anthology of each pattern, what is accepted by grammarians and what is rejected. It states the frequency of each pattern in the poetry of Qays Lubna, and tries to find an explanation as to why a certain pattern of the conditional sentence is commonly used and not others, on the basis of meaning. Then it examines the structural aspects of the conditional sentence, like omitting, moving forward, linking, etc, while annotating the grammatical cases related to the subject of this study.
