Abstract

All praise shall be exclusively to Almighty Allah, and prayer and peace shall be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. This research is about a grammatical term that has largely caused embarrasment to grammarians, who have adopted different positions in dealing with it, namely, accepting it, rejecting it and being in between. This term is “ addition ” (az-Ziyadah), which has received intensive treatment by old and recent grammarians (NaHwiyin). The reason behind the embarrassment of grammarians about the term “increase” is their fear of using it in grammatical analysis, especially in the analysis of the Holy Qur’an, and they are right. In order to lift this embarrassment, this research seeks to find an appropriate solution concerning this embarassment by adopting the term  (al-Takhattī) which is mentioned in some grammar books starting from Sibawayh’s the book (alKitāb ) and allowing this term to replace the term “ addition”. The current research presents the reasons, types, and unacceptability of Takhattī. In addition, it provides examples and citations to clarify it and state its origin. This is reinforced by using practical examples illustrating the purpose to describe what is meant by the term. The researcher hopes that the term (Takhattī) will spread and gain familiarity among researchers, to be used in Arabic grammatical analysis (‘Irab), especially in the analysis of the Holy Qur’an, to serve the book of Allah, Almighty. I do not claim that I have acheived the full aim or come anywhere near the end of the matter, but for me it is enough  that I have put forward my suggestion in the hope that with the help of Allah, this research contributes to provide a solution to a problem that has greatly embarrassed  grammarians. Here, I put this research in the hands of researchers to show their contributions and share their views to complete or evaluate this research; verily two heads are better than one. Finally, this research is only a building block in this edifice.  I hope that more reseach will follow.  Praise be to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon prophet Muhammad, his family and all his companions, and Allah Almighty is the guide to the straight path
