Abstract

Owning and selling wild animals is an issue discussed by contemporary jurisdiction Muslim scholars, as there are benefits in owning and selling them nowadays which requires a new reading into the scholars debate. Muslim scholars agree that owning dogs is permissible for farming, cattle, and hunting, but nowadays, more important benefits of owning dogs have arisen like police dogs used for detecting drugs and explosives, finding criminals and freeing captives. These benefits relate to preserving the life, mind, and property. However, dogs cannot be owned without being traded because training them requires a lot of time and effort. As for owning wild animals other than dogs, new benefits have appeared recently which were not in present in the past. Zoos, for instance, own various wild and non-wild animals which bears economical benefits, creates jobs, supports research and entertains adults and children alike. Muslim scholars have agreed that selling wild animals is permissible for hunting, or to use their skin or bones but debated over the other benefits.
