Abstract

Madarij al-Salikin Byna Manazil Iyyak Na'bud Wa Iyyak Nasta'ien” (Ranks of The Divine Seekers) is one of Ibn al-Qayyim’s most extensive and detailed books about the study of morals and the reformation of morals through self-discipline. In this landmark book, Ibn al-Qayyim brought together his moral theory that was dispersed in his books as Ibn al-Qayyim has a systematic methodology in laying the conceptual framework for the subjects of the study of morals and values.

This study focused on the elaboration of Ibn al-Qayyim’s methodology in studying morals through his book ”Madarij al-Salikin” where his methodology is clearly displayed. The study covers the following:

Introducing the linguistic and Islamic definition of morals, whether it is inherited or acquired, and the presentation of Ibn al-Qayyim’s methodology in:

Description of the significance of morals, explanation of the importance of morals in religion; the Islamic conceptualization of morals; the classification of moral aspects; outlining the sources of positive and negative moral traits; indicating animal ethics; description of the relationship between the sole and morals; the importance of moral reformation and self-discipline and control to refine morals and move up from bad to better, and from better to best: Extrapolation of the arguments of the renowned mystics in this regard; and the ranks of individuals in their ways of seeking morals; explaining the right way to do this, and how to deal with harm by others.
