Abstract:
The phenomenon of suicide poses a significant threat to both Islamic and non-Islamic societies. Scholars from various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and medicine, have struggled to find an effective remedy for this alarming issue, each contributing their perspective. This study focuses on the religious dimension, which is a crucial aspect in addressing this issue, particularly in light of the Islamic creed of belief in divine decree and predestination. Allah, Who created humans and knows their inner thoughts and circumstances, did not leave them to fend for themselves. He sent messengers and prophets to explain the fundamental purpose of creation, which is to worship Allah alone.
The religious texts in the Qur'an and Sunnah affirm that Allah has ordained all matters and that everything happens within His dominion and according to His will and decree. Human life unfolds within this framework, fulfilling the wisdom of trial and testing. When an individual understands this wisdom, their life, as described by the Prophet (peace be upon him), becomes one of constant benefit: they are grateful during times of ease and are rewarded, and they remain patient during hardship and are likewise rewarded. If their faith in divine decree and predestination is deeply rooted, it acts as a strong barrier and protection against spiritual diseases, such as despair, that could lead to suicide.
