The Meaning of the Term "Sa'y" in the Hadiths of Rituals in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: An analytical Study
Keywords:
Sa'y, Mas'a, Safa, and, Marwa, Hajj, UmrahAbstract
This research collects and analyzes the hadiths containing the term "Sa'y," referring to the ritual between Safa and Marwa in Hajj and Umrah, as well as related derivatives, from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. The study investigates the meaning and implications of these terms and concludes that the authentic phrases from the Prophet ﷺ do not use the term "Sa'y" but rather refer to "Tawaf between Safa and Marwa." The term "Sa'y" appears in the words of the Companions, describing the recommended fast-paced running during the crossing of the valley between Safa and Marwa. This valley, where running is encouraged, was historically known as "al-Mas'a" and distinguished from the rest of the area between Safa and Marwa. The research highlights the impact of changing terminology on the understanding of certain texts and its influence on the interpretations of the juristic scholars.
