Abstract

his research examines the reality of the ordeal faced by Imam Al-Ṭabari and the stance taken by the Hanbalis, through an analysis of the most prominent historical narratives that mention these events. It critically examines these accounts, identifying any contradictions or inconsistencies within them. The study explores the underlying causes of the ordeal, the nature of the Hanbalis’ relationship to it, and the extent to which the figures and factions involved were aligned with the Hanbali school. Additionally, it addresses the accusations leveled against Al-Ṭabari and clarifies his position on the theological issue of Allah’s sitting on the Throne.” The research further sheds light on the role of personal ambitions and rivalry among peers in exacerbating Al-Ṭabari’s ordeal. Moreover, it analyzes the formation of the Hanbali school during Al-Ṭabari’s era and the consolidation of its legal tradition, while also highlighting the views of prominent Hanbali scholars regarding Al-Ṭabari and his works.

The study concludes that the ordeal of Imam Al-Ṭabari was multifaceted and complex, with interwoven factors of a legal, psychological, social, and emotional nature. The research emphasizes that both Imam Al-Ṭabari and Imam Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal shared the same ideological direction, with no intellectual or theological discord between them. They both adhered to the purity of belief and the methodology of the pious predecessors
