Abstract

Abstract:

This study explores the application of the principle of taʾwīl (interpretation) and its impact on diverting the meaning of a term from its apparent sense, specifically in the interpretation of the phrase "diminishing of the earth" as mentioned in the Qur'an. The research examines how exegetes have inclined toward interpretative readings based on sensory perception, and assesses the extent to which the interpretative principle has been adhered to in diverting the apparent meaning. This is done in light of evidences and contextual indicators that support the literal interpretation, as well as the foundational principle governing textual interpretation within the framework of Islamic legal theory.
