The Reality of Motivating Principals for their Employees in the City of Riyadh

Abstract

The study sought to identify the extent to which principals in the city of Riyadh motivate the employees in their schools, obstacles that limitthe progress of such practices; appropriate suggestions that helpkeep the motivationof principals to their employeesin schools. 

The researcher used the descriptive survey method. The study population consisted of teachers,student counselors and clerks working in public schools in the city of Riyadh, for the academic year 1432/1433.The study sample totaled 285 individuals, of whom: (236) teachers, (13) student counselors and (36) clerks.

The most significant results of this study show that the majority of the study sample believes that the principalsshow trust in the employees working with them in the school and praise them for their efforts. Principals, in return,represent a good example of dedication and sincerity at work;they thank and praise them in public and in private meetings andencourage initiatives undertaken by the school staff. The major obstacles that prevent principals from motivating their employees are as follow: Not involving them in managing the school, having moody principals, and discriminating against employees.

The study recommends granting more administrative and financial authority to principalsto allow them to motivate their staff, addingelements to the reports of managerial performance which illustrate their ability to motivate their staff, and holdingfrequent training courses and workshops for principalsabout the motivation skills, its methods, means, and constraints.
