Abstract

This study analyzes the use of grammatical terms in Sentences in Syntax attributed to Al-Khalil Ibn Ahmed Al-Faraahidi (d. 175 AH). It is also claimed that Ibn Shuqair (317 AH) and Ibn Khaalawayh (370AH) authored this book as well. The researcher investigates the problematic use of terminology in the book.

The researcher has found out that the use of syntactic terms today is different from those used by early grammarians. They have observed that there is a different signifier for the same sign, considering it as a complete synonymy. For example, the term "al-Qat’" in Koufa is synonymous to that of "Al-Hal" in Busra. The research also explores other new terms and uses.

Methodologically, this study is based on two headings: The first one looks into the terminology pluralism, in which Al-Farahidi used the Kufian and Busrian terms side by side; to show that this plurality represented a functional variation in use in some terms and represented synonymy in other terms. The second heading focuses on the uniqueness of the terminology or use. The research reveals the terminology making of the author and a new use for the meanings of terms used before. Besides, the study has an introduction and a conclusion highlighting the most important research results.
