Abstract

The study aims at creating a balanced scorecard for evaluatingthe performance of academic departments in Saudi universities. The researcher uses theinductive and deductive approaches in addition to thehierarchicalanalysismethod in order to arrange the dimensions and indicators of the balanced scorecard according to their relative importance.

The most prominentresult of the study is theidentification of the dimensions and indicators of thebalanced scorecardaccording to the relative importance of each dimension. The university administration dimension comes first, thenthe dimensions ofuniversity teaching, scientific research, academicandstudentcounseling, andcommunity service, respectively. The study alsoshows the possibility ofovercoming the problem ofpersonal biasin building the dimensions of the balanced scorecard and arranging its indicators by applying a hierarchicalanalysisapproachbased onthe use ofobjective mathematicalmethods.
