Abstract

The study aims to assess the reality of science teachers’ implementation of alternative evaluation in elementary schools. It is based on the descriptive survey method.Ituses three instruments prepared by the researchers after confirming their validity and reliability: an observation checklist to identify to what extent teachers use alternative evaluation; two questionnaires, one is to identify alternative evaluation strategies and tools appropriate for use in elementary schools from the viewpoint of specialists, and the other is to identify difficulties. The study sample consists of 30 teachers selected by random multistage sampling method. Appropriate statistical analysis of the data was carried out.

The results of the study show a poor teachers' use of alternative evaluation, withaverages ranging between 1.975 and 2.486. The performance-based evaluation comes first in ranking with an average of 2.486 while peer evaluation comes fifth with an average of 1.975. However, difficulties of peer evaluation come first with an average of 3.93. Finally, difficulties of evaluation using conceptual maps come fifth with an average of 3.41. The main difficulties encountered are the large numbers of students in a classroom and the lack of teaching aids.
