Evaluation of the eleventh grade textbook “National and Social Studies” according to male and female teachers at secondary schools in Hafr Albaten governorate

Abstract

The study aims at evaluating the eleventh grade textbook “National and Social Studies” from the points of view of teachers at secondary schools in Hafr Albaten governorate. A verification measure consisting of (54) items was developed to evaluate the assigned textbook, and was administered to (56) male and female teachers who teach social studies discipline. Results of the study revealed that the book was, in general, highly ranked by the teachers with a mean of (4.16) in all the domains together. Teachers’ evaluation rates in all subsidiary domains were also high, while the objectives got the highest rate with a mean of (4.36), the introduction with an mean of (4.30), followed by the content with a mean of (4.19), teaching aids and activities got the mean of (4.18), assessment was rated with a mean of (4.05), and the general layout of the book was rated with a mean of (3.98). Results also showed differences of statistical significance at (0.05= α) in evaluating estimations referring to the variable of gender in favor of males, while no statistical significant differences were detected in the evaluation rate connected to the variable of the academic level or teaching experience. The study recommends that teachers and supervisors should participate in the design and layout of textbooks.
