Abstract

The study aimed to reveal the challenges facing deaf students in higher education and their requirements. The study relied on mixed models in which data and methodology are combined in one study. The participants in semi-open interviewed consisted of 6 faculty members who were specialists on Deaf education working in special education departments at Saudi universities. A questionnaire was also distributed to a second sample of faculty members in special education departments at Saudi universities. At the end of the questionnaire collection process, the number of questionnaires valid for analysis reached (105). The results showed that the most prominent challenges that deaf students may face in university education, according to the participants’ opinions, are: educational and academic challenges, language and communication challenges, social challenges, and financial challenges. The most important requirements necessary came in at a very high degree. The dimensions were ranked in order (dimension two: requirements related to communication and linguistic aspects, dimension one: requirements related to the educational and academic process, dimension three: requirements related to social aspects), and all of them were at a very high level. There were no statistically significant differences in the level of importance attributable to the variables of academic rank and gender.
